The new numbers come from Strategy Analytics and the report ranks Samsung has the world’s largest smartphone vendor followed by Apple, Huawei, Lenovo, Xiaomi and LG. Android continues its dominance with 84.6 Percent market share in 295.2 million smartphone units sold this quarter. However the market growth has decreased. “Global smartphone shipments grew 27 percent annually from 233.0 million units in Q2 2013 to 295.2 million in Q2 2014. We estimate worldwide smartphone growth has halved during the past year, from 49 percent a year ago to 27 percent today. ” stated Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics The market share of Apple’s iOS dipped to 11.9% this quarter as compared to 13.4% last year, despite growing shipments. Windows Phone also saw a decline from 3.8 % to 2.7 % this quarter as compared to last year. Samsung managed to sell 74.5 million unit this year as compared to 76 million last year and perhaps its share will further decrease as market becomes more focused on low price, low margin budget android segment. Xiaomi stands at 5.1 percent of the global market share, closely following Lenovo (6.8 %) and Huawei (5.4%), which is remarkable achievement in just 4 years since it’s inception and 3 years of selling smartphones. The company has recently started expanding beyond china and has been well received in all markets including India. Perhaps we will see it topple Lenovo and Huawei to become the third largest smartphone vendor by next year.
